U.S. to provide life-saving HIV treatment to 43,000 people in Imo

The U.S. Government, through its Embassy in Nigeria, has assured the Imo State Government of its support for the identification and provision of treatment to approximately 43,000 people living with HIV in the state.

This was made known in a statement by the Public Affairs Unit of the U.S. Embassy on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the support will be extended to over 14,000 people already receiving such treatment through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), programme.

It stated that the assurance was given when the U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission, Kathleen FitzGibbon, led a delegation on a courtesy call to Imo governor Emeka Ihedioha.

The delegation included a team from PEPFAR, and the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).,

The statement quoted FlitzGibbon as describing HIV epidemic in Imo as “critical and requiring rapid and sustained efforts to identify the victims and put them on life-saving anti-retroviral treatment”.

<img src=”http://ocdn.eu/images/pulscms/Y2E7MDA_/10ed88ed1b194f06b5feb0b01a67e315.jpg” alt=”Ms Kathleen FitzGibbon, U.S Deputy Chief of Mission to Nigeria, and Imo Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, in Owerri (NAN)”>
Ms Kathleen FitzGibbon, U.S Deputy Chief of Mission to Nigeria, and Imo Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, in Owerri (NAN)

Such a move, she said, would not only ensure that the PLHIVs live a long, normal, productive, and healthy life, but will also help in breaking the transmission of the virus to sexual partners.

She said that the treatment programme would thereby improve the state’s health indices and enhance efforts to control the HIV epidemic.

FitzGibbon acknowledged the work that had been accomplished by the Government and other stakeholders, who partnered with PEPFAR and CDC over the years, to ensure that over 14,000 people living with HIV in the State were receiving life-saving treatment.

“Considering the over 43,000 others that need to be identified, all stakeholders must increase their efforts as part of the CDC-led PEPFAR ART surge in the State,” the diplomat said.

The Deputy Chief of Mission also emphasised the significance of Imo in the trajectory of HIV/AIDS epidemic control in Nigeria.

“Imo’s population, geographic location, diversify and status as a tourism and hospitality centre in the south-east make it an important area of focus for the delivery of HIV/AIDS services in the country,” she said.

FlitzGibbon highlighted to Ihedioha the negative effect of the payment of some user-fees, which serves as a major barrier to people living with HIV, from accessing treatment.

She called for the immediate elimination of such fees, particularly fees charged by healthcare facilities for non-essential services or those already provided by PEPFAR.

She said that the U.S. government had increased its budget for HIV control activities in Nigeria, with increased focus on identifying and putting more people on treatment through the ART.

FlitzGibbon explained that this would enable more people with HIV to live healthy, productive lives, especially now that adherence to treatment leads to the virus becoming undetectable and therefore not transmittable to sexual partner.

She requested Ihedioha to prioritise the procurement of additional HIV test kits to support the current PEPFAR initiated surge efforts.

She said that the additional test kits were necessary for identifying people living with HIV in rural communities of the state.

She emphasised that such urgent intervention would help in moving Imo towards HIV epidemic control by September 2020.

According to the statement, the highlight of the visit was the formal launch of the Imo ART Surge Programme by Gov Ihedioha, who pledged to work with the U.S. Government and other stakeholders.

Ihedioha declared the immediate elimination of the payment of “user-fee” charges points of seeking care in Imo State hospitals and other health facilities, to serve as a major incentive to people living with HIV accessing treatment.

He said that the state and local governments would come up with a mechanism of reimbursing the facilities since the fees had now been waived.

Ihedioha said that the state government had made provision in its 2020 budget for the purchase of additional HIV test kits to complement the commodities already being provided by PEPFAR.

According to the statement, the recently released data from the U.S.-supported Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey revealed that there were approximately 1.9 million people still living with the virus in Nigeria.

It quoted the survey as revealing that approximately 58,000 of the population reside in Imo, adding that they required appropriate medical treatment to live a normal, productive and healthy life.

The U.S. Government recently announced support to Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Enugu, Lagos, and Nasarawa States for the launch of an ART Surge, a programmme designed to put an additional 500,000 people living with HIV on treatment.

The 500,000 people will be in addition to the more than 800,000 people already on treatment as part of the overall PEPFAR intervention.

Put Your House In Order, PDP Slams Buhari Over Wife’s Attack On Shehu

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Wednesday described the public outburst by First Lady, Aisha Buhari, as “another sad commentary” that shows that all is not well at the State House.

This is even as the party noted that the development has “exposed President Buhari’s failure to lead and enforce an organized governance structure and that the governance of our nation has been ceded to the chaotic and selfish whims of a cabal.”

In a statement signed by the party’s spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP described as appalling “that under President Buhari, our once productive and highly organized Presidency has been bastardized and reduced to Kunle Bamtefa’s soap opera, Fuji House of Commotion.”

The statement added: “Instead of governance, the Buhari Presidency has continued to serve Nigerians and the international community with tragicomedies that make a mockery of leadership.

“Nigerians can now further see why nothing works under the Buhari Presidency; why the administration has remained shambolic and plagued with policy summersaults and executive recklessness; why our economy has remained comatose and why our nation has been dangerously drifting to the brinks under President Buhari’s watch.

“Indeed, the Buhari Presidency has proven to be a huge national embarrassment and a big problem for our nation.

“Never in the history of our nation has the office, essence and symbol of Nigeria’s Presidency been so stripped and ridiculed.”

SHOCKING: Akpabio Quits Senatorial Rerun, Chooses To Remain A Minister

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswil Akpabio, is no longer going to participate in the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial re-run election scheduled for January, 2020.

Akpabio announced his decision in a letter to the Chairman of the National Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC), Adams Oshimhole.

In the letter issued on December 2, 2019, Akpabio said he huge responsibility has been made on him as a minister, saying he could not abandon the assignment placed on him by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The minister, therefore, submitted the name of a replacement and also urged the party to run in his place.

The letter reads, Below is Akpabio’s letter:

I wish to recall that I was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District Election held on the 23rd day of February, 2019,” the letter read.

Upon the declaration of Christopher Ekpenyong of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the purported winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, I challenged same at the National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Tribunal in a split decision by a majority of two to one (Honourable Justice W. O. Akanbi and Honourable Justice 0. D. Etubu) dismissed our Petition, while in a dissenting judgment delivered by Honourable Justice Hahz S. Tahlr, the petition was adjudged proven and all the reliefs sought were granted.

Being dissatisfied with the decision of the majority judgment and upon the erudite points of law and conclusion contained in the minority judgment, we appealed to the Court of Appeal,

Calabar Judicial Division which in a unanimous decision delivered on the 9th day of November, 2019, allowed our appeal and set aside the Judgment of the Lower Tribunal.

I have taken into consideration the critical national assignment bestowed on me by Mr. President which will be of immense importance to Nigerians and in particular the indigenes of the Niger Delta

region and have resolved to remain as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to further discharge my contributions and services to our great fatherland.

It is on the premise of the foregoing and particularly in line with the provisions of Section 35 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) that I want to formally and voluntarily withdraw my candidature as the candidate of the

All Progressives Congress (APC) for the forthcoming Court ordered Re-run Election for the Akwa lbom North-West Senatorial District.

It will be inappropriate in the circumstance and pursuant to Sections 33 and 35 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) for the party to immediately communicate this withdrawal to the Independent National Electoral Commission and forward to her the name of another candidate of the party to replace me at the Court ordered Rerun Election for the Akwa lbom North-West Senatorial District.

I want to seize this opportunity to thank our formidable party, the All Progressives Congress, its leadership at the state and national levels for availing me the party platform and the immeasurable support I received throughout the period of the election and beyond.

Mr. Chairman, may I advise that the National Working Committee of our party should reiterate our earlier plea to the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission to redeploy Mr. Mike Igini (the Resident Electoral Commissioner) from Akwa lbom State if a free and transparent re-run exercise is to be guaranteed.
